Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

On March 21st, 2025, SGL packed their hurleys and helmets and made their way to Ho Chi Minh City for a weekend of hurling and camogie, hosted by the Saigon Gaels.

Two men’s hurling teams made the journey from Singapore, split evenly to make for a balanced tournament. The teams faced off in a round-robin format against Saigon’s own divided squads, with each team playing three friendly matches each.

The day finished with the senior squads from both clubs taking to the field for a final showdown. It was a hard-fought battle, but in the end, Saigon edged out the victory with a final score of 0-9 to 1-4. While we may not have taken home the trophy this time, the level of hurling played was something everyone can be proud of.

The camogie contingent from Singapore was small but mighty, with four dedicated players making the trip. Teaming up with two players from Hong Kong and rotating in Saigon players for each match, the newly formed side faced three challenging games. Despite not securing a win, they gelled remarkably well and the girls left the pitch feeling more confident for future tournaments.

After a day of intense competition, it was time to unwind with post-tournament celebrations at The Flying Pig. Awards were handed out, drinks were flowing, and many songs were sung. A highlight of the night was Kev from Singapore taking to the guitar, keeping the crowd entertained as always. The craic was mighty, rounding off a fantastic trip for all involved.

A huge thank you to the Saigon Gaels and Asia GAA for their hospitality and for organizing such a brilliant tournament. And another huge thanks to our captains, Brendan and Anita, as well as their support system, who organized the last 7 weeks of training prepping the teams for the day. It was fantastic to see both lads and ladies from Singapore who have never played before put the helmet on. We’re looking forward to seeing the squads grow even more this year and will be back for vengeance in the second half of 2025.

Hurling is up!
