Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur was the venue for this year’s South Asia Games, and once again the Singapore Gaelic Lions lined out in numbers. The Men sent 2 Senior teams and 1 Junior, while the Ladies sent 1 Senior, and two in the Intermediate/ Junior mixed division.
Men’s Senior had highs and lows – one team took home the cup final after a nail biting final against Saigon. Saigon were very strong and had beaten the senior team in the group stages, and were poised to do the same in the final, going into half time 4 points up. The SGL found their footing though and drew level before the full time whistle bringing it to extra time. The 4 additional minutes were delayed by the onset of torrential rain and once we got going again, even the 4 extra minutes wasn’t enough to separate the teams. A side line free kick taken by Petesy O’Brien won the day during Golden Score. The 2nd Senior team were beaten by Viet Celts in the Plate Final. Men’s Juniors had a very strong day out – finishing with 6 wins out of 6 to take home their cup.
A special mention to Liam McGinley, who took home the Men’s MVP award.
The Ladies’ Senior team also made it to their cup final, lining out against Saigon, much like the earlier men’s final. The outcome of this game was reversed however, with the ladies being beaten by a very strong Saigon outfit. The other two Ladies teams were divided into Intermediate and Junior divisions after the group stages. The white team made it to the Intermediate Cup semi-final, while the red team were beaten at the last hurdle in the final of the Junior Cup.
